Vajpayee feels sorry for Naresh Trehan

New Delhi : Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tuesday took strong exception to the manner in which the management of Escorts hospital here had dealt with leading cardiologist Naresh Trehan.

"Dr. Trehan has operated upon so many people but now he himself has been operated upon," remarked Vajpayee in his inimitable style referring to the manner in which Trehan was removed from the post of executive director of Escorts last week.

He said that had the action been taken by doctors it could have been understandable "but not when managers or hospital administrators take such action".

On May 18, Fortis Healthcare management had removed Trehan from the post citing conflict of interests as the reason behind the move. Ranbaxy-promoted Fortis Healthcare took 90 percent stake of Escorts in September 2005. Trehan, who holds a minority stake, has served the hospital for 20 years as its executive director.
