Campaigning had been intense between arch-rivals Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Apart from the two parties, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) also made its presence felt in the campaigning.

Congress has never lost control of the Shimla Municipal Corporation since it was formed in 1986, but poll observers said the party was struggling to retain power this time.

There were 112,352 voters spread over 150 booths in the resort town. The fate of 94 candidates for 25 wards (or seats) is to be decided.

The results will be declared Friday.
