The CBI said Veena Saini and her husband Naresh Saini were arrested on the complaint of a resident of Nangloi in west Delhi that the two were demanding Rs.50,000 from him to let him construct his house.

The complainant told the agency that the couple was demanding the amount, dubbing it as "protection money" to shield him from any harassment from MCD and other government officials during the construction of the house.

The complainant said the councillor threatened him that she would set the MCD officials after him if he refused to pay the money.

The CBI said it laid a trap and arrested the couple while accepting the money from the complainant in the presence of independent witnesses.
