Bhiwandi (Maharashtra) : About 55 percent voting was reported in the incident-free civic polls held here Sunday for 83 of the 84 wards in this communally sensitive town near Mumbai.
In ward number 61 from where the Shiv Sena's Madan Naik was declared unopposed. There were 593 candidates in the fray for the remaining seats.
While independents had held sway in the outgoing house – the mayor too was an independent candidate – Shiv Sena hopes to come to power this time having won the assembly seat from here in the 2004 elections.
The vote count will be held Monday.
