Baghdad : A car bomb explosion in central Baghdad Monday killed at least 16 Iraqis and wounded 28, media reports said.
The blast rocked Jomhouriya district near the al-Khalani mosque; one of Baghdad's most revered sites. Numerous vehicles in an adjacent car park caught fire as the explosives-laden car was detonated, Voices of Iraq new agency reported quoting police sources.
The wounded were moved to a nearby hospital.
Pan-Arab news channel al-Arabiya said that another explosion was reported near the Karada district that killed several people.
Meanwhile, US-led coalition forces said they had detained nine suspected terrorists in an operation Monday, aimed at disrupting an Al Qaeda-affiliated network in Mosul and Anbar province.
