Shashi Tripathi named UPSC member

New Delhi : Shashi U. Tripathi, a senior officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and a secretary in the ministry of external affairs, has been named a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

An order to this effect has been issued by the president.

A 1970-batch IFS officer, Tripathi was secretary (west) in the external affairs ministry and has served as India's high commissioner in Canada and consul general in New York.

Among the tasks assigned to the UPSC is recruiting civil servants for the central government by holding examinations and interviews, taking up disciplinary cases, giving advice on transfers and deputations and looking at pay scales and pension.

It is a constitutional body.
