New Delhi : A group of Gujjars staged a demonstration here and burnt effigies of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Wednesday to protest the police firing that killed at least 14 members of the Gujjar community in Rajasthan Tuesday.
Around 200 people protested in Khajoori Khas locality, which has a large Gujjar population, in northeast Delhi.
The protestors, mainly women, shouted anti-Raje slogans and set fire to tyres to block traffic, police said.
"The demonstration was peaceful and protestors dispersed after some time. Taking note of the gravity of the situation, we have deployed extra police personnel in the area," Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaspal Singh told IANS.
At least 14 people were killed in Rajasthan Tuesday when police opened fire to disperse thousands of Gujjars who had blocked a national highway demanding that they be included in the Scheduled Tribe list.
