"Lance Naik Kuldeep Singh of the 7 Para regiment of the army shot at and killed Lance Naik Anil Sharma of the same regiment in Machil sector along the Line Of Control in Kupwara district," a senior police officer here said.

The menace of fratricidal shootouts, following stress and tension of anti-militancy duty hostile environments, has been bothering senior army officials for nearly a decade.

The measures suggested by experts to stop such incidents include frequent vacations for the deployed personnel, better working conditions, regular entertainment and engaging the services of psychologists for counselling.

Meanwhile, troops of the 14th Rashtriya Rifles Wednesday killed a foreign militant of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Shogbaba village of north Kashmir's Bandipora district, 80 km from summer capital Srinagar.

"The slain militant has been identified as Suleiman of LeT," an army spokesman said.

In another incident, a police sub-inspector identified as Javaid Ahmad Lone died when his car collided head on with a mini-bus near, 12 km from here, in Pulwama district.
