Chopra, winner last week at Ginn Sur Mer Classic, is now five-under 211, and gained 11 places from overnight.

The leader is American Scott Verplank, who despite making pars on his last three holes rallied from two behind to shared lead after three rounds. Verplank shot a 71 and was tied with Canada’s Stephen Ames (70) going into a final round.

Chopra had birdies on fourth, seventh and eighth, but then came a bogey on ninth. He made up for that with a birdie on 10th. However two bogeys, one on 11th and another on 17th ruined his card somewhat.

Ames, who had a two-shot lead at one stage, bogeyed two of his last three holes with three-putts and carded a 70. Brett Wetterich (72) might have joined the leaders but for his triple bogey on the final hole as he suffered a two-stroke penalty for accidentally moving a twig inside the hazard while deciding whether to play the shot.

Verplank and Ames were at 13-under 203, with four other Americans Justin Leonard (70), Tag Ridings (71), Jeff Overton (69) and Tim Petrovic (68) with Australian Matthew Goggin (69) in a five-way tie for third.
