The last rites of the swami were performed as per Hindu rituals by monks near the banks of the Hooghly river at Belur Math, the global headquarters of the order.

Thousands of his disciples, including a large number of foreigners, gathered at the Math to pay their last respect to the swami. Swami Gahanananda passed away Sunday at the Mission’s hospital here. He was 91.

Throughout his life, he was keenly interested in the service of the poor, sick and suffering people.

He was elected president of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission in May 2005.
