Ramakrishna Order chief cremated

Kolkata, Nov 5 (IANS) The mortal remains of Swami Gahanananda, the 14th president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, were consigned to flames Monday afternoon.

The last rites of the Swami were performed according to Hindu rituals by monks near the banks of the Hooghly river at Belur Math, the global headquarters of the order.

Thousands of his disciples, including a large number of foreigners, gathered at the Math to pay their last respect to the Swami.

Swami Gahanananda passed away Sunday at the Mission’s hospital here. He was 91 and suffering from age-related ailments.

Throughout his life, he was keenly interested in the service of the poor, sick and suffering people.

The Swami was elected president of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission in May 2005.
