Tehelka tapes reveal that the administration of Gujarat state was involved in the killings of thousands of Muslims in 2002. The Commission said that the allegations had far-reaching implications and raised vital constitutional issues, which need to be promptly addressed in the interest of all. “The authenticity of the tapes must be examined and the allegations made therein must be investigated. The investigation must be effective and independent. If the investigation does not substantiate the allegations, it will help to clear the air. If, however, the allegations are found true after investigation, appropriate corrective action will have to be taken”, said the Commission in a statement.

The NHRC directed the Gujarat government to give its consent for the CBI investigation within two weeks.
