New Delhi : A foundation named after the late Congress leader Babu Jagjivan Ram to help out socially disadvantaged sections of the society was finally approved Thursday with the government agreeing to give Rs.540 million.
The union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accepted the proposal by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar, daughter of Jagjivan Ram, to set up the foundation, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters.
“The Babu Jagjivan Ram National Foundation will facilitate implementation of various schemes for the social, educational and economic empowerment of the disadvantaged sections of the society,” he said.
“It will also help these sections to join the mainstream society and face emerging challenges of the modern world,” the minister added.
