No work, all play at Bajaj’s Akurdi plant

Pune : Although workers of Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) have managed to get their way inside the Akurdi plant located near the city, they feel BAL’s decision to let them in has no meaning as there is no work for them.

C.P. Tripathi, vice president of BAL, said: “The workers wanted to come inside so we allowed them. We are not going to resume production. That is very clear. So, they can have a big party, play cards, sing devotional songs. It is their choice.”

The workers are feeling like birds in a cage. They have to report at the plant at 6:30 am and sit idle the entire day till 3:30 pm.

The management has laid out carpets and installed television sets for the workers at the spare parts shop inside the plant.

The decision to let the workers inside the premises was taken on the insistence of union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. He has now made it clear that his role as a mediator now ends, with the workers inside the factory.

“It was the management that had decided to stop production. The workers wanted me to help them enter the factory, which I have done. So, now it is between the workers and the management how they want to deal with the problem from now on,” he clarified.

The workers feel this decision is only to frustrate them. With no work, some are bound to quit.

According to sources, 90 percent of the workers are now ready to opt for the voluntary retirement scheme offered by the management since it is clear that BAL will not resume production at the factory.
