Kanpur : Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has been invited by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) to watch the third One-Day International against Pakistan here Sunday.
“UPCA secretary Rajeev Shukla has extended the invitation to Azharuddin,” a source told IANS.
Azharuddin was very popular in this city, especially with workers of the leather tanneries. They had even formed an Azharuddin Fan Club, which was discontinued after his alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal.
The Indian cricket board later banned him for life from playing cricket.
The source said Shukla had also invited film star Shah Rukh Khan. But given the security considerations, the popular actor is not likely to turn up.
Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeshwar and Chief Minister Mayawati will be among the guests for the match.
India and Pakistan have won one match each in the five-ODI series. They will also play three Tests after the ODI series.
