Rawalpindi : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf Saturday said proclamation of emergency was a “very difficult” decision but taken in the “best national interest”.
“Imposition of emergency was to ensure effective governance, maintain impetus in efforts to root out extremism and terrorism and to provide for a stable political transition,” Musharraf said chairing 103rd Corps Commanders conference at the general headquarters here.
Musharraf briefed participants on the situation leading to emergency and the evolving environment after it’s proclamation.
“A stable security environment is essential for economic progress and it will be ensured that no effort is spared to eradicate extremism and militancy,” the president. “All necessary steps shall be taken to hold free and fair elections as early as possible.”
Musharraf said all necessary resources will be provided to the troops engaged in their mission (against terrorism).
