New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has described as “uncalled for” a statement by West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi.
In a strongly worded statement, the CPI-M politburo protested against the governor’s remarks Saturday, a day after Gandhi disapproved of the CPI-M cadres entering Nandigram villages.
“The statement issued by the governor regarding the latest developments in Nandigram is surprising,” the politburo said.
Questioning the use of police force, the Governor issued a statment Friday saying he was ‘shocked and outraged’ by the events at Nandigram.
Governor Gandhi had said: “I cannot be so casual to the oath I have taken as to restrict my reaction to a pious expression of anguish and outrage. I trust the government will not only go into the whys and wherefores of this tragic occurrence but will also ensure that it leaves no room for a repetition of the kind of trauma witnessed.”
“The governor has been fully apprised of the reasons behind this abnormal situation,” it said.
“The governor is well within his constitutional role to communicate his views to the state government and the central government,” the CPI-M said.
The politburo has however taken exception to Gandhi going public and said: “He has chosen once again to go public with a statement which is uncalled for. The content of the statement makes it clear that this is not the role expected from the office of governor under the constitution.”
On Friday a delegation comprising four Bengal CPI-M MPs and a CPI-M MLA had met the governor.
The delegation gave a memorandum detailing the governor of the train of events that had occurred in Nandigram, updating him on the prevailing situation there.
