Jammu : An Indian Army soldier ran amok and shot dead two senior colleagues with his service rifle in a battle school in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday.
Lt. Col. SD Goswami, the defence spokesman in Jammu, said the soldier, identified as Vivek Kumar Sharma, “ran amok and killed a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) with his service rifle in the Corps Battle School at Bhalara”.
The officer said the soldier had been arrested and a court of Inquiry ordered to ascertain the reason behind his action.
Since militancy erupted in Jammu and Kashmir in 1990, the troubled state has reported many acts of security personnel killing themselves and their colleagues due to “prolonged duties in disturbed conditions that cause distress”. Denial of leave, small tiffs or other personal reasons also contribute to such incidents.
