Five held in Afghanistan for helping foreign fighters

Kabul, Nov 11 (Xinhua) Afghan and the US-led Coalition forces detained five people suspected of being facilitators of foreign fighters in southern Afghan province of Ghazni, the coalition forces said here in a statement Sunday.

The operation conducted on Saturday focused on disrupting foreign fighters’ facilitators reported to be operating in the Shajoy district, the statement said.

The combined force searched a compound in the district where they detained the five individuals, who were suspected to have links with foreign fighters, it said.

“Afghan and coalition forces will continue to pursue all credible leads to prevent foreign fighter recruits from joining extremist forces,” said coalition spokesman Maj Chris Belcher.

Some 55,000 foreign troops are being deployed in this war-torn country to keep security and fight insurgents. Militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 5,600 people since January this year in Afghanistan.
