Mine blast in Sri Lanka kills a civilian

Colombo, Nov 11 (DPA) One civilian construction worker was killed and another injured when their vehicle was caught in a claymore mine explosion believed to have been planted by Tamil rebels inside a wildlife park in south-eastern Sri Lanka, military spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said.

The incident took place at Katagamuwa Saturday night, about 390 km southeast of the capital, the spokesman said.

The incident came as the government was setting up a joint operations command in the south, to oversee security in the area following the deaths of five farmers who were hacked to death this week by suspected Tamil rebels.

The rebels are believed to be carrying out attacks in the area in a bid to divert the attention of the security forces who have stepped up operations against rebel strongholds in the north.
