The stabbed body of 21-year-old Hina Saleem was found buried in the garden of the family home in Sarezzo, near the northeastern city of Brescia in Italy, Aug 11, 2006.

In what had been termed as an “honour killing”, the Pakistani girl who lived in Italy with her boyfriend was allegedly killed because she had “dishonoured” her family and refused an arranged marriage.

Saleem’s maternal uncle, convicted of helping to conceal the body, was jailed for two years and eight months, the Dawn News quoted lawyer Alberto Bordone as saying.

The sentences would be appealed, he added.

Saleem’s Italian boyfriend Giuseppe Tempini was provisionally to be awarded 20,000 euros.

Bordone said he was awaiting Judge Silvia Milesi’s justifications for the sentences, before launching an appeal. “I hope we can obtain lighter sentences,” he added.
