Mumbai : Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) president G.M. Banatwalla has written to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi urging him to undertake on war footing relief and rehabilitation measures for the unfortunate victims of violence and floods.
"In Assam nearly 5,100 Muslim families, numbering about 25,000 people, are still languishing in relief camps in extreme neglect since Bodo violence 14 years ago," he stated.
A high level delegation of IUML led by Mr. Banatwalla returned last week from a tour of districts New Bongaigaon and Barpeta. Other members of the team included Banatwalla’s colleagues Naeem Akhtar and Imran Qureshi, Lower Assam IUML president Dilir Khan, general secretary Mufti Usmani, Advocate Moinul Haque Choudhry, Muzammil Ahmed, Shahid Islam Choudhry, Advocate Nazrul Islam and Habibur Rahman.
A camp visited by them had 1,760 families with about 8,200 people.
Banatwalla wrote to the Assam Chief Minister that even the promise of a paltry sum of Rs. 50,000 per family made by the present government has not been carried out.
The IUML has appealed to the State Chief Minister to release without any further delay at least the promised relief of Rs. 50,000 as well as agricultural land pattas per family, and carry out rehabilitation / resettlement in a manner to make available the opportunities to the unfortunate victims to earn their livelihood e.g. by establishment of industries in their area.
The memorandum to the Chief Minister expressed shock that flood victims in minority concentrated areas were fired upon when they demanded relief from government. It was submitted that Muslim flood victims of Dubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Nowgaon, Kamrup and other districts, who moved to other areas, faced untold hardships and security.
