Guerrilla commander killed in Kashmir encounter

Srinagar : A top commander of the Harkatul Mujaheedin (HuM) militant outfit was Friday killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, police officials said.

Sajad alias Chacha, division commander of HuM, was gunned down by troops of the 18 Rashtriya Rifles, 10 Para regiment and Special Operations Group (SOG) during a joint operation at Shokbagh, 64 km from here in north Kashmir’s Bandipore district.

“The operation is still continuing. We have reports that between two to three militants are still holed up in the area,” a police officer said.

In another incident, security forces Friday surrounded Daramwari Lalpora village in the northern Kupwara district, 110 km from here, on specific information about the presence of militants, the officer said.

“Heavy exchange of fire between holed up militants and surrounding troops is continuing in the village. More reinforcements have been rushed to the area,” he informed.

The officer added that security forces and militants were engaged in yet another gunfight at Pranhal village, 80 km from here in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
