Coimbatore : Passengers had a miraculous escape at the Coimbatore airport Saturday when an alert pilot noticed just in time that two planes were about to take off from the same runway.
A New Delhi-bound SpiceJet aircraft was on the same runway as a Bangalore-bound Deccan Air flight, both readying for takeoff with more than 200 passengers each, airport sources said.
As the SpiceJet plane began its run, its woman pilot noticed the parked Deccan Air plane on the tarmac and realised that the two aircraft were bound to brush against each other.
The woman pilot applied the brakes immediately and brought the plane to a stop before the two planes could touch each other.
The passengers of both planes had to de-board, though both flights took off after a delay of about two hours.
When contacted, the two airlines and airport authorities refused to comment on the incident.
