Bush announces initial USD 2.1 million in aid for Cyclone storm in Population

Bangladesh Washington : US President George W. Bush announced USD 2.1 million in initial contributions for emergency relief of Cyclone Sidr storm in Bangladesh that has so far killed 2,000 people.

A White House statement said the United States will also send military ships and planes to help in relief and rescue operations as well as a medical team.

“Working with the Government of Bangladesh, we are assessing critical needs to determine where our assistance can be most effective.

“The United States is committed to helping the people of Bangladesh and their government as they face the many challenges of rebuilding and recovering, ” the statement said.

Cyclone Sidr, one of the worst storms to strike impoverished Bangladesh in recent years, has killed at least 2,000 people, a number that is expected to rise as the South Asian nation continues to assess the damage.

Thousands are still missing, while an estimated 280,000 others are unable to return to their homes which were wiped away by the Category four storms.
