Dhaka : The toll from Cyclone Sidr that devastated Bangladesh last week has gone up to 2,579, according to the flood and disaster management ministry of Bangladesh.
In the latest report released Monday, the disaster management ministry put the total number of people injured at 1,491 and 1,063 as still missing.
However, the unofficial count put the toll figure at over 3,000.
The Bangladesh government Monday asked the international community to assist in its efforts to provide emergency aid to the cyclone victims and post-cyclone rehabilitation.
Advisor to the Flood and Disaster Ministry Tapan Chowdhury told the media that donor countries and agencies so far have pledged emergency aid worth $140 million.
About 3.3 million people in 28 districts have been affected by the cyclone that hit Thursday, the ministry said.
About 300,000 houses were completely ruined and over 600,000 dwellings have suffered heavy damage, the report said.
