Satyam’s chief is Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year


New Delhi : B. Ramalinga Raju, chief of Satyam Computer Services’ Ltd., a consulting and information technology services company based in Hyderabad, was adjudged Entrepreneur of the Year for 2007 by Ernst and Young (E&Y) India, part of the global consulting and management firm.

Raju will represent India at the E&Y World Entrepreneur of the Year Award at Monte Carlo to be held next May.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Keshub Mahindra, chairman and founder of Mahindra and Mahindra Group, one of India’s auto majors.

The ninth annual award ceremony was held at one of the capital’s hotels late Tuesday evening.

The jury, headed by ICICI Bank Managing Director and CEO K.V. Kamath, selected the winners from over 170 nominations.

HCL patriarch Shiv Nadar bagged an award in the services category, while Sajjan Jindal of JSW Steel emerged the winner in the manufacturing category.

Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, founder of Acme Telepower, was named the Start-up Entrepreneur of the year and Ela Bhatt of Gujarat-based Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) received the Social Entrepreneurship Award.

Atul Punj, chairman and managing director of Punj Lloyd Ltd., got the award in the infrastructure and construction category.

Cyrus Poonawalla, chairman of Pune-based Serum Institute of India Ltd., bagged an award in the healthcare and life sciences segment.

Raghav Bahl of Network 18 won the Business Transformation Entrepreneur award while Shikha Sharma, CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, was named the Manager of the Year.
