New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was Friday unable to conduct a lie detector test on industrialist Ashok Todi in connection with the mysterious death of his son-in-law Rizwanur Rahman in Kolkata, after doctors declared him medically unfit.
“Todi was taken for the polygraph test, but it couldn’t be conducted after doctors found him medically unfit for the procedure probably because he had undergone a heart surgery a few days ago,” CBI Joint Director (Special Crime) Arun Kumar said.
“We had called him here for the test to verify and reconfirm some details, which he had told us in Kolkata. Todi was interrogated at length on Thursday regarding the case,” Kumar told IANS, adding that they would call him again when required.
He said that Todi’s brother Pradeep would not undergo the test.
Earlier, officials had however said that Todi had already undergone the polygraph test.
CBI sources told IANS that during interrogation Thursday, Todi revealed that he had used his influence but not money to break up his daughter Priyanka’s marriage with graphic designer Rizwanur.
“Todi said he didn’t pay anything to the cops but indeed used his influence. He denied putting any unwarranted pressure on Rizwanur. Todi also denied paying any professional goons at any point,” a source said.
A lie detector test is not admissible in a court of law, but is a potent tool used by the police to corroborate evidence already obtained through investigation.
Rizwanur, 30, was found dead on Sep 21, barely a month after his marriage with Todi’s daughter Priyanka. Todi allegedly threatened his son-in-law with dire consequences and put pressure on him through the police to annul the marriage.
Before his death, Rizwanur accused police officers Gyanwant Singh, Ajoy Kumar, Sukanta Chakraborty and Krishnendu Das of harassing him.
Asked about the progress of the case, Kumar said: “We are about to complete the interrogation and would present our report on Dec 16 in the concerned court.”
It was also learnt that Todi has flown back to Kolkata after being interrogated.
The CBI, which took up the case from Kolkata Police on the directions of the Calcutta High Court, had already questioned Todi, his brother Pradeep and daughter Priyanka in Kolkata.
