North Sea oil platform evacuated after fire

London : Some 159 people have been airlifted from an oil platform in the North Sea after a major fire broke out Sunday morning.

A “very serious” fire had broken out at 8:30 local time on the Thistle Alpha platform, some 190 km northeast of Sumburgh in the Shetland Islands.

According to a spokesman for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in Kinloss, seven rescue helicopters have been in operation at the site to take people to safety.

No casualties have been reported so far, the official added.
