Congress undecided about key seats in Gujarat

Ahmedabad : The Congress has come out with a list of 50 candidates for the second phase of the Gujarat assembly elections next month, but it is yet to decide on its candidates for several key constituencies including Maninagar from where Chief Minister Narendra Modi is seeking re-election.

The Congress is yet to announce its candidates for Sarkhej, also in Ahmedabad and represented by Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, and Godhra, the site of the train burning tragedy in February 2002 that sparked statewide communal violence.

The Congress nominees for Anand, Kapadvanj and Petlad in central Gujarat, Sabarmati, Dariapur and Shahpur in Ahmedabad, Visnagar, Kheralu and Patan in Mehsana region and Himmatnagar, Prantij and Modasa in north Gujarat have not been announced so far.

The party released the list for the second phase Sunday night in Delhi. While polling for 87 seats will be held in the first round of Dec 11, the second round will cover the remaining 95 seats.

All eyes are on the Rakhiyal constituency in Ahmedabad as leading Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel and former home minister Gordhan Zadaphia is widely expected to be the Congress candidate there.
