Indian stock markets lose ground

Mumbai : The Indian capital markets saw significant selling across the board Wednesday in the last hour of trade, a day before the expiry of the derivative segment.

The benchmark sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) shut shop at 18,938.87, down by 188.86 points or 0.99 percent.

The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) declined by 80.6 points or 1.41 percent to close at 5,618.40.

The broader indices, however, closed flat. The BSE mid-cap index closed at 8,383.49, down by 10 points or 0.12 percent. The BSE small-cap index closed marginally up by 3.23 points or 0.03 percent at 10,375.30.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Maruti Suzuki, which gained 3.11 percent to Rs.966.70, Bajaj Auto moved up 2.82 percent to 2,727.90 and Bharat Heavy Electricals advanced 1.93 percent to 2,724.50.

The top losers on the Sensex were Hindalco, down by 3.66 percent to Rs.184.35, Tata Steel declined 3.41 percent to Rs.818.70 and Associated Cement Co tumbled 3.30 percent to Rs.1,075.25.
