Of the three, two were detained in eastern Slovakia and the third was arrested in Hungary, Slovak police said. The arrests came following several months of joint operation by the police of the two countries.

There was no immediate information from the police whether the seized radioactive material, including uranium-235 and uranium-238, has been enriched to weapon grade.

It was also unclear to whom the suspects were going to sell the material.

Enriched uranium can be used in power plants, and with higher level of enrichment, for making nuclear weapons.
