Delhi to host Commonwealth Chess Championship

New Delhi : National champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly and world’s youngest grandmaster Parimarjan Negi will spearhead the Indian challenge in the the Commonwealth Chess Championship to be played here Dec 2-10 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

Asian women’s champion Tania Sachdev of Delhi and GM Koneru Humpy are among the strong medal contenders in the event, which is expected to feature 14 GMs from Commonwealth countries.

Commonwealth Chess Association president and reigning champion GM Nigel Short is not likely to defend his title at the tournament offering a total prize pool of Rs.800,000.

A total of 12 Commonwealth nations, including Canada, are expected to part in the event, which offers another opportunity for the Indian youngsters to prove their mettle at international level after five gold medals in the recently concluded Asian Youth Championships at Al Ain, UAE.

The competition will be held over 10 rounds.
