‘Total Quality’ assessment begins at BHEL Bhopal unit

Bhopal: The ‘Total Quality’ assessment of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, (BHEL), Bhopal unit for CII-Exim Bank
Award For Excellence-2007 began today with an opening meeting chaired by R.K. Singh, Executive Director, BHEL,Bhopal and convened by Prabhat Kumar, General Manager (P & D & BEX).

The site assessment is being conducted by a high level team led by Brig. (Dr.) KS Bhoon, Director, Ashok Leyland and other members are Suresh Sethi, Deputy General Manager, BEL, Bangalore, Vinay Mahashabde, Assistant General Manager, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, Ashutosh Varadpande, Purchase & Materials, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd., Pune and J Bhattacharya, Business Excellence Champion, CII, Bangalore.

In his opening remarks R.K. Singh welcomed the team members and informed that BHEL Bhopal has applied for CII-Exim Bank Award For Excellence-2007 to get an external perspective which shall enable the unit to strengthen its movement towards business excellence. He shared the challenges faced by the unit in recent years and the strategies adopted by the unit. He called upon the team members to conduct a thorough assessment of all operations and also recommend the opportunities that exist for further improvement.

In his welcome address Prabhat Kumar informed that ‘TQM’ approach adopted as pilot project in 1995 was extended to cover the entire unit in 1998 and the approach was christened as Movement Towards Business Excellence, (MBE),at the same time. He assured full support and cooperation to the team on behalf of BHEL, Bhopal, during site assessment.

He made a presentation on the operations of BHEL, Business Environment, the ‘Total Quality’ journey pursued, the focused initiatives taken and the strategic planning adopted by the unit.

Bhoon, Leader, CII Assessment team, addressing the gathering, explained purpose of the site visit.He informed that he and his team members have gone through the Position Report submitted by BHEL Bhopal and now we are here to see to assess the roots of TQ culture in the organization.

It may be recalled that BHEL, Bhopal had earlier won the Golden Peacock National Quality Award for TQ practices in 1999, CII-EXIM Bank Commendation Certificate for Strong Commitment to TQM in 2003 and CII-Exim Bank Commendation Certificate for Significant Achievement in 2004 and 2006.
