The Haryana cabinet, which met here Friday under the chairmanship of chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, approved the ‘Haryana allowance to eunuchs’ scheme.

The government had announced the scheme in June last year, but gave its approval at Friday’s cabinet meeting. The scheme will be made effective retrospectively from June 1, 2006.

The scheme aims to provide Rs.300 per month to socially and economically deprived eunuchs.

The spokesman said that a survey conducted recently by the Haryana health department has revealed that there were 1,305 eunuchs in the state.

To claim the allowance, the eunuch should be a resident of the state or have been staying in the state for over five years.

The applicant will have to be over 18 years of age and will have to submit a certificate from the concerned civil surgeon of the area that the person is an eunuch. The applicant should not have a criminal record.
