Former world boxing champion to be tried for murder

Panama City : A prosecutor in Panama has requested the indictment of former boxing world champion Vicente Mosquera for homicide, officials said.

Mosquera shot and killed Antonio Trejos during a scuffle that left three other people injured with bullet wounds at a beach resort, prosecutor Tulia Pardo said and quoted witnesses’ versions here Thursday.

Pardo asked for a provisional stay for boxer Jose Arboleda, implicated in the case, as well as minor Evin Beltran, accused of concealment.

The crime occurred Sep 3, 2006 at the beach resort of Puerto Caimito, 30 km of the Panamanian capital.

According to witnesses, quoted by the prosecutor, Mosquera allegedly rushed away from the beach resort after the crime and was accompanied by many people, including Arboleda.

Beltran, accused of hiding the weapon, had turned himself in to THE police. Mosquera, 32, was World Boxing Association featherweight world champion from April 2005 to August 2006.
