Sporting jolt East Bengal 2-1

Kolkata : Mohammedan Sporting jolted fancied East Bengal with 2-1 win in the return league of Calcutta Premier League here Saturday.

The black-whites played with guts and determination to defeat a tired looking East Bengal team, playing their third match in one week.

Sporting went into the lead in the second minute when Adewusi Adebayo sent a curling free kick into the net.

East Bengal’s goal machine Edmilson restored parity when his free kick ducked and entered the Mohameddan net.

Edmilson took his tally to 11 goals with the equaliser.

From thereon East Bengal mounted pressure but Ashim Biswas, Dipankar Roy and Edmilson missed sitters.

Mohammedan Sporting on the other hand kept their defence tight. They scored the match winner in the 80th minute when Kuluthangon scored off a Roque Barretto shot that struck the cross-piece and returned into play.

It was sweet revenge for Sporting as it was shredded 6-2 by East Bengal in the first league match.

Now the league is set for a close finish with East Bengal on 22 points from 10 games and Mohun Bagan on 23 from the same number of matches. Sporting, with this win, move on to 12 points from as many games.
