Anil Bhattacharya met Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi Friday and asked for help to find his abducted daughter Anuradha.

Anuradha, 15, a resident of Janai in Hooghly district, was a popular singer of religious songs. She and her family used to perform at different venues across the country, media reports said.

The kidnapping took place when Anuradha and her family came to the house of Shantanu Roy and his wife Srabanti in Dum Dum, a neighbourhood here.

The father alleged that the hostess helped some youths to abduct Anuradha.

Soon after the incident, the father received a phone call from the abductors. Later, he received another call from a man who claimed to be in Bangladesh and a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon). The caller said Anuradha was with him.

“We rushed to the Dum Dum police station and lodged a complaint but police did little to trace her,” the aggrieved father said.

“A Hindu Bangladeshi businessman who had befriended us before is behind the abduction. He either abducted her for lust or to make her perform in shows, as my daughter could sing in Bengali, Hindi and English,” Bhattacharya said.

Two days later, yet another caller identified the town in Bangladesh where Anuradha had reportedly been taken — Jessore, near the border with India.

The parents also lodged a complaint with the West Bengal Women’s Commission. The chairperson of the commission asked the West Bengal director general of police to investigate the matter immediately.

“We think it is a case of human trafficking. We have asked the anti-human trafficking cell of the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to look into it,” inspector general of the CID Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay said.

He said a detailed report has also been sought from North 24-Parganas district police as the incident occurred under their jurisdiction.
