17 injured in New York gas explosion

New York : Seventeen people, including four children and a fire fighter, were injured in a gas explosion in an apartment building in New York City, officials said Sunday.

The blast rocked the five-storey building near Marcus Garvey Park Saturday, according to firemen. All the four children had burn injuries and one was said to be in critical condition.

The fireman was injured when debris fell on him as he entered the first floor of the building. Some of the building’s walls were blown out and residents of the apartments as well as nearby buildings were evacuated.
