Jhajjar (Haryana) : United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi Sunday assured farmers that the government would hike the minimum support price (MSP) for purchasing wheat from them.

Responding to a demand made by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for raising the MSP to at least Rs.1,100 per quintal, Gandhi assured all help from the central government.

Gandhi was here to lay the foundation stone for a thermal power plant and an educational institute.

The government last year announced the MSP for wheat at Rs.750 per quintal with an additional bonus of Rs.100.

The government has been importing wheat from other countries at much higher rate of Rs.1,500-1,600 per quintal to overcome the shortfall in wheat buffer stocks.
