Syrian, Turkish Foreign Ministers hold talks

Damascus : Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem discussed issues of common interest with his Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan during their meeting here on Saturday.

An official Syrian source said that the talks dealt with bolstering bilateral relations, in addition to developments in the Middle East particularly in Iraq, Palestine, and Lebanon.

Efforts being exerted to activate the peace process in the region was also on the agenda, said the source.

Views regarding the Mideast situation were identical, the source said, stressing the necessity for achieving comprehensive peace that restores the occupied Arab territories including the occupied Syrian Golan heights.

The two sides affirmed that resuming dialogue among Palestinians was essential in order to ensure their unity and establishment of the independent Palestinian state the two sides expressed support for preserving the unity, sovereignty and independence of Iraq and the achievement national reconciliation.

Iraq’s neighbouring countries Foreign Ministries meeting to be held in Turkey was also on the agenda of the meeting.

Opinions on the Mideast peace conference to be held next month were exchanged between the two top officials.

Babacan arrived here on a two-day visit earlier in the day. The Turkish official will visit the Palestinian territories, Jordan, and Israel.
