An urgent meeting of the union cabinet has been scheduled to consider the governor’s report on the political situation in the state.

Thakur sent in his recommendation for the president’s rule after chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy sent in his resignation Monday evening.

Kumaraswamy’s government was reduced to a minority after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) withdrew support to the 20-month-old govenrment Sunday.

The alliance in Bangalore broke up as Kumaraswamy’s Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) refused to honour his agreement with the BJP for transfer of power Oct 3.

Soon after the Karnataka governor’s missive was received, the core group of the Congress party that leads the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) met at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence to deliberate on the situation.

Presided by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the meeting was attended by senior ministers Pranab Mukherjee, Arjun Singh, A.K. Antony and H.R. Bhardwaj, National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan and Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, said official sources.
