London : Britain’s top police officer revealed here Tuesday that the number of terrorist plots in Britain is increasing “year on year”.
Ian Blair, chief of the Metropolitan Police, told the Home Affairs Select Committee that at present there is no need to extend the maximum detention period for terrorism suspects without charge from 28 days, although there will be in the near future, Sky news reported.
The chief urged the parliament to find a way to prolong the detention period before an atrocity occurs.
Two years ago, former Prime Minister Tony Blair was defeated in the Commons in his attempt to introduce a 90-day detention period for terror suspects.
The Association of Chief Police Officers called in July this year for some suspects to be detained for “as long as it takes,” said the report.
Gordon Brown is also working to extend the limit by an extra 28 days, subject to approval by a high court judge on a week-by-week basis.
