Gaza : A senior Islamic Hamas movement leader in Gaza has said that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon should quit his post “because of his full partiality towards Israel”.

Mahmoud al-Zahar, foreign minister in the former Hamas-led government, accused Ban Ki-moon of violating the rules of the international organisation “by his biased attitudes towards Israel”.

“We follow up with a great concern the biased steps carried out by the United Nations in relation to conflicts in the Middle East,” al-Zahar said Monday in a written statement faxed to journalists.

The Hamas movement, which is listed as a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the US, took control of the Gaza Strip by force. Its militants had unseated President Mahmoud Abbas’ security forces in mid-June.

“The UN’s biased stance towards Israel contradicts the basic role of the organisation to restore security and settlement and achieve justice in the world,” said al-Zahar.

Al-Zahar referred to the UN human rights rapporteur John Dogard, who had slammed Israel and accused it of committing crimes against the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

“There is an increasing partiality towards the Israeli occupation, and not only this, but also the UN adopts the occupation’s position. It also goes far beyond this and justifies the occupation crimes,” said al-Zahar.
