Islamabad : The North West Frontier Province (NWFP) assembly was dissolved Wednesday by Governor Ali Jan Orakzai on the advice of Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani due to the political turmoil in the region.

On Monday, Durrani sent a “summary” to the governor to dissolve the assembly as 37 members resigned and as, he said, the political situation was not conducive to its continuance. The assembly stands dissolved if the governor does not sign the order within 48 hours of the chief minister’s request.

NWFP Law Secretary Naseem Chamkani said the governor signed the dissolution order.

The NWFP chief minister, who belongs to the opposition All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDM), threatened to dissolve the assembly to block the Oct 6 presidential election, in which President Musharraf got a clear majority but whose result has been withheld on the Supreme Court orders.

Reports said that a caretaker chief minister would be appointed by Thursday morning.

Under the constitution, fresh elections are held within 90 days
