Doctor, attendant arrested for hiding rape case evidence

New Delhi, (IANS) A senior doctor and an attendant of the national capital’s ESI hospital, where a woman doctor was allegedly raped in her hostel room last month, have been arrested and charged with medical negligence and concealing evidence, police said Monday.

“We arrested chief medical officer (CMO) Sunil Kumar Ravi and nursing attendant Hari Kishan Meena for medical negligence and concealing evidence on Sunday,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Rajesh Kumar told IANS.

“The duo has also been granted bail by a city court,” he added.

According to Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat, Ravi was arrested for preparing a fake medical leaving certificate of the 24-year-old woman doctor who was allegedly raped and left critically injured in the hospital premises on Sep 21.

The victim – a general physician of the hospital, hailing from Punjab – was found lying unconscious on the floor with needle marks on her arms and strangulation marks on her throat when her sister went to visit her.

The victim was admitted to the hospital’s emergency ward but later shifted to the privately run Balaji Healthcare Hospital in Pashcim Vihar area of west Delhi. After almost a month her condition is still serious and she has been declared unfit to give any statement to the police.

Police had initially only registered a case of attempted rape and murder against unknown people.

“We have still not registered a rape case and are awaiting her statement and reports from the forensic laboratory,” Kumar said.

Bhagat said: “We arrested Meena for bungling with the stomach wash samples of the victim and concealing some crucial evidence.”

It was also reported that a gynaecologist of the same hospital was arrested and charged with medical negligence, but the officials refused to comment on the issue.
