Welspun bags order to supply pipes to Canada

Mumbai,(IANS) TransCanada, an Alberta-based pipes and energy company with assets worth $29.5 billion, will buy specialised pipes worth Rs.183.5 billion from Mumbai-based Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren Ltd (WGSRL).`

The company makes submerged arc-welded (SAW) pipes at its manufacturing locations at Anjar in Kutch district and near Dahej port, both in Gujarat.

The Canadian order has enabled the company to swell its order book position to Rs.553 billion from Rs.380 billion at the start of current fiscal.

The TransCanada order will be partly executed from India and partly from WGSRL’s US plant located at Little Rock, Arkansas. All the orders will be executed in the next 12-18 months, a company spokesperson said.

WGSRL manufactures various types of SAW pipes and has supplied pipes to deep offshore gas pipeline projects in the Gulf of Mexico in the US. The company’s customers include oil majors Shell, Chevron and ExxonMobil.

The company is currently expanding production capacity by almost 450,000 tonnes with a capital expenditure of Rs.40 billion.
