New Delhi : US Ambassador to India David Mulford Thursday met Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon amid the continuing uncertainty over the two countries’ civil nuclear deal.

Mulford met Menon and discussed the developments in the implementation of the nuclear deal, officials said.

This was the US envoy’s second trip to South Block this week. He met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday, just before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was in Abuja, in a telephonic conversation informed US President George W. Bush about “certain difficulties” in operationalising the nuclear deal.

The landmark deal has been facing opposition from the Left parties that have threatened to withdraw their crucial support to the Manmohan Singh government if it was operationalised.

After Manmohan Singh indicated last week that the nuclear deal was on hold, there has been a flurry of statements from New Delhi and Washington, reassuring all that while the timeline was flexible, the deal would be done.
