New Delhi : Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh has called upon the Unesco to respond to the challenges of poverty and illiteracy in a rapidly changing world.

Addressing the 34th general conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in Paris Friday, Singh said education is the “core of Unesco’s mandate and therefore it must continue its work in technical and vocational education, adult education and for removal of illiteracy within the framework of Education For All (EFA)”, an official statement said Saturday.

He called the attention of the global community towards science education and stressed on the popularisation of the subject for development of a scientific temper.

The minister also addressed a roundtable conference on the theme of “Right to Education, Right to Development”. He said in a democracy, economic growth could be sustainable only if equity and justice accompanies it.

“Development of human resources depends not only on expansion of educational opportunity but also on ensuring that education is inclusive,” he said.

The minister spoke about India’s impressive programme of expanding secondary and tertiary education. He also held bilateral meetings with the education ministers of Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
