President calls Bhutto, condemns Karachi terrorist attack

Islamabad : President General Pervez Musharraf Friday called by telephone the leader of Pakistan Peoples Party Ms Benazir Bhutto who survived a terrorist attack in Karachi last night and strongly condemned the incident that killed over 100 people. The President assured a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators of the “heinous crime” to justice.

The President during the call, expressed his “shock and profound grief” over the incident and prayed for the safety and security of Ms. Bhutto.

The President expressed his firm resolve that all possible steps would be taken and a thorough investigation would be carried out to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He said extensive security measures had been taken in consultation with Pakistan Peoples Party leaders for ensuring the safety of Ms Bhutto’s procession.

President Pervez Musharraf also lauded the devotion to duty and sacrifice of scores of police officials who lost their life and received injuries in the tragic incident that occurred while Ms Bhutto’s rally was on its way to the Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam from the airport.

The President hoped maturity and restraint would be displayed in this hour of tragedy by all and there would be a refrain from unnecessary blame-throwing.

He appealed to all segments of society to facilitate police and the administration in the conduct of their investigation.

Ms. Bhutto thanked the President for his concern. President Musharraf and Ms Bhutto expressed their unflinching resolve to fight the scourge of extremism and terrorism.

They agreed that there was a need for the entire nation to unite to rid the country of the menace of suicide bombings, terrorism and extremism.
